How to shoot an enemy in a diving turn

The lead indicator has been lying to you: here’s how to shoot in World of Warplanes.

HOW TO SHOOT IN WORLD OF WARPLANES

THE LEAD INDICATOR IS GOOD BUT NOT PERFECT

The lead indicator is wrong roughly half the time.

  1. Lead indicator is right when enemy is moving in a straight line
  2. Lead indicator is calibrated to the highest caliber weapon on your plane
  3. If the lead indicator is moving away from the enemy plane: aim beyond the indicator
  4. If the lead indicator is moving toward the enemy plane: aim between the indicator and plane
  5. For guns with 1000 m/s velocity, the lead indicator is generally very accurate
  6. For guns under 650 m/s velocity, the lead indicator is generally poor

MUZZLE VELOCITY

Each gun will have different muzzle velocities.  The high the muzzle velocity, the less you have to lead the target.

Map the longest range gun to a different key to allow for sniping at long range without overheating the guns that are meant for close range.

Blue is the path of the enemy, Red is the lead indicator, and Orange is where you should aim

Pick a spot in the opponents’ flight path and let the enemy fly into the bullets. The blue circle is the path of the enemy, and the orange circle is where I’m shooting.

DON’T SHOOT AT MAX RANGE

When the lead indicator lights up, that’s the max range the guns can reach.  However, it will be a low percentage shot.

Here are different effective ranges for the size of gun [roughly]:

  • 7mm – 400m
  • 12/15mm – 600m
  • 20mm – 800m
  • 30mm+ – 1000m

USE TRACERS

Every plane is going to have different gun layouts, velocities, accuracy, and ranges.  Sometimes the best way to figure out where to aim is simply to spend time with the plane and noticing where the tracers are landing to aim your shots.
